The juror is Laura Moriarty, Director of Exhibitions at the Gallery at R&F Handmade Paints. Laura is a painter and printmaker whose curious works bridge the boundary between painting and sculpture. Her work is exhibited widely and included in many collections and publications. As Director of the Gallery at R&F in Kingston, New York, Laura has been deeply involved in the curation of encaustic exhibitions for the past nine years, and has organized several installments of “Encaustic Works”, the international juried encaustic biennial exhibition sponsored by R&F .

Sherman Mills artist [ smARTS ] Matthew Naftzger has been on the road for months. His travels began here at Sherman Mills and the first stop was a two month show in Scottsdale, Arizona. His travels since have been many — now in Chattanooga.

This is what the traveling Works of Man looks like. Inside his box truck is a traveling studio so that he can continue to make works on the road, his groovy trailer gives him a roof over his head, and his trusty Stella scooter is his transportation at show sights.

Join sherman mills [ smARTS ] textile artist Pam Pawl for a special weaving class at Peters Valley in Layton, NJ. You might even call it a retreat!

Explore weaving puckers, pleats, tubes, pockets and color blocks. Learn to design, set up and weave on a warp that shows one of the many aspects of double cloth. You’ll be working on both 4 and 8 harness looms using a variety of materials and finishing techniques. You will create many samples to use as future inspiration in this round-robin class.

detail: new day

Sherman Mills [ smARTS ] glass artist Rachel Shoham has created a 3.5′ x 3.5′ mural made completely of glass . It is kiln fused and painted with glass powders and frits. The work was created for a specific site, Ronald MacDonald House, using the natural light to reflect the quality and reflection of the glass. The subject is family and child. Her goal was to help uplift the spirit of the children undergoing treatment in the hospital.

The glass mural is now installed at the Ronald MacDonald House located on 100 E. Erie Ave. Philadelphia, Pa. 19134.

Humankind Design, Joel Erland and Kate Kaman made the metal and wood frame and helped Rachel install it at the location. Additional art was donated by Nancy Tabas and Debra Simon.

ArtWalk 2008 will be unveiled at Metro Center in Washington, DC. Friday, April 11th at 12pm

This large-scale art project sponsored by the DC Commission for the Arts and Humanities will consist of twelve - 24 Ft by 6 Ft billboards depicting 12 artist’s interpretation of the theme Emerge. All are welcome to come to the opening/dedication at 12 noon on April 11th.

ArtWalk is located at 10th street between New York Avenue and H Street, just two blocks from the metro center station. Washington, DC

Artists’ Statement: I Emerge, Therefore I Exist
by smARTS artists Kate Kaman and Joel Erland

Awed by the scale of the DC Artwalk 2008 project, Kate Kaman & Joel Erland decided to experiment. Somewhat of a departure from their previous work, EMERGE is a reflection on some of their favorite virtues in contemporary culture: self-awareness, innocent irreverence, and mirth. The viewer intuitively sees the groundhog and his insect friends as protagonists- not merely animals. The underlying message is post-ironic: I emerge, therefore I exist. The artists asked themselves, “Is it even advisable to make artwork that deals with emergence and existence? And if so, what if that artwork makes you smile?”
